Experts recommend, “Slow and steady weight loss. Depending on your starting weight, experts recommend losing weight at a rate of 1/2 to 2 pounds per week. Weight loss may be faster at the start of a program.” http://win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/choosing.htm#responsible
And, “Men and very active women may need up to 2,500 calories daily. Other women and inactive men need only about 2,000 calories daily. A safe plan is to eat 300 to 500 fewer calories a day to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week.” http://www.fda.gov/opacom/lowlit/weightls.html

A healthy exercise program addresses all five aspects of physical fitness: aerobic endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body fat composition.

Exercise Recommendations for People Aged 18 to 64

Do both aerobic activities and strengthening activities.

Aerobic Activities
• Do at least 10 minutes at a time.
• You can combine moderate and vigorous activities.
• Slowly build up the amount of time you do physical activities. The more time you spend, the more health benefits you gain. Aim for exercising twice as long as the minimum times below.
• If you choose activities at a moderate level, do at least 2 hours and 30 minutes a week.
• If you choose vigorous activities, do at least 1 hour and 15 minutes a week.

Muscle Strengthening Activities
Do these at least 2 days a week.
• Include all the major muscle groups such as legs, hips, back, chest, stomach, shoulders, and arms.
• Exercises for each muscle group should be repeated 8 to 12 times per session.

How to slow down your metabolism?

Question by Manda.Pandah: How to slow down your metabolism?
First off, if you are just going to give a stupid answer like “why would you want to slow down your metabolism?” or “with all the obese people in the world wanting to be like you, why would you want to change?” or any other dumb/rude answers I have read for others in my situation asking this question. Don’t answer it. I don’t wanna hear it. If you think having a fast metabolism and being underweight is healthy you are an idiot.

How can I slow down my metabolism? Are there any medications to take that will help slow it down or make you gain weight?

I am 21 years old, 5’1″ and only 85 lbs. I am about 20 pounds or more under weight. I have tried so many things to gain weight and there was either no change or I lost weight. I have tried those nasty 3000 calorie drinks, eating 2500+ calories a day, exercising, just sitting on my butt and not doing anything, and lots of other things. Nothing has worked.
I’m NOT going to gain muscle. Maybe a little here and there but muscle SPEEDS UP your resting metabolism and your active metabolism. It would also look hideous on a tiny girl that it skin and bones.
It’s not really about the looks of being “skinny”. It is unhealthy. The main thing right now is that my husband and I want a baby but I do not ovulate and my cycles are so random because of my weight. I’ve been do a doctor and they have done tests, nothing is “wrong” with me but my metabolism is very, very fast.

go to your doctor and ask him/her for help…just get on a Regular 2000-2500 calorie diet and gain some muscle..muscle weighs more then fat and sitting on your butt eating as much as you can is not gonna help you be anything but unhealthy

What is the best way to lose weight this summer?

Question by Renee Holiday: What is the best way to lose weight this summer?
Okay so I am at a good weight, and I have been maintaining my weight just fine. I am 4’8 and 114 pounds. I want to lose a little weight, maybe like ten pounds because I am so short and I need to keep it off. I want to look better for my freshman year (9th grade). The problem is exercise because when I go running, I am not motivated much so I do not accomplish much. I will work on exercising this summer when I have time and sign up for a gym. Here is what I eat daily

Breakfast: Banana or oatmeal
Lunch: Salad or sandwhich usually w/ quaker minis or something
Snack: special k protien meal bar
Dinner: healthy home cooked meal
Desert: fruit
So I eat pretty good but maybe once or twice a week (I have a sweet tooth) I might have cookies, or a muffin etc. Do I need to completely stop eating these while I am “dieting” over the summer? What is the best way to lose weight this summer and keep it off? Thanks!
Oh yeah and I count my calories (1500 a day) I eat the right amount of fat and everything too, the only thing is sometimes I have too much sugar in a day.

Did I just screw up or made myself better.?

Question by Tora: Did I just screw up or made myself better.?
Hihi, I am 14 years old 5”2 and I weigh 130 lbs. In August I started loosing weight, I lost my first 10 lbs exercising by butt off and eating two slices of bread and one apple a day. After reaching 140 my mom gave me a book called Fat to Skinny. So I started loosing weight really slowly by eating A lot of bacon and eating 1 to 2 pieces of bread and some lettace a day, I reached to 130 where I currently still am. For the last 3 weeks ive been eating Apples/Special K/Skim milk/Green tea, And eating only 300 too 500 calories.. Yeah, my stomach has seriously shrunk, Ive been on this platue for 2 weeks now and i am really getting sick of it, So today I ate A whole lot of peanut butter to try and break it. I have heard of “Yo-Yo Dieting” where people eat really low calories and then start eating 1200 calories again, And end up gaining all there weight back, So is me eating a whole lot of calories tonight gonna really mess me up? Am I gonna gain from upping my calories? Don’t say “zomg14 yr old go enjohy ur life” I am home schooled, so I am mostly on my butt all day.

I am going to start eating more calories from now on, I don’t want my stomach to shrink, But I mostly want to know is me eating from 400 calories a day all the way to 1,500 calories a day gonna screw me up like Yo-Yo dieting says, Gonna gain weight? :/ Thanks for answers. :)

Dude if you’re exercising you need more than 500 calories. And you’re not getting any fat in your diet, fat doesn’t make you fat. Look into paleo nutrition or the zone diet. both of those things are totally legit I’ve seen them change people’s lives. Trust me. You need more food. That’s why you got so hungry today

Is it bad to eat before going to bed even if you are on a set amount of calories per day?

I’m doing a bit of dieting, eating 1500 calories per day and exercising. I find that I get quite hungry at night, and I find it near impossible to fall asleep while hungry. But does it really matter when I eat as long as I am absolutely sure of exactly what I’m eating and how many calories I’m taking in per day?

Got a fashion show and have to model. I need to look fit by May?

Okay well I am 15 years old and in school we take fashion class where we learn about fashion all year and in the end create a fashion show. I’m going to model so, I need to look fit by then.

I don’t need to lose weight since I’m 5’3 and 112 pounds. I do however want to get rid of the extra fat on my thighs, arm and tummy. I also want to tone them.

I have been eating healthy since I was 14 years old and I still am but have one cheat day in a week. Yes, I eat 5+ vegetables, drink lots of water, take in protein, carbohydrates and fat and try my best to eat around 1500-2000 calories (I don’t like eating much).

I don’t like to exercise outdoors but I do dvd workouts which are REALLY effective. They’re 30+ minutes long and they include cardio workout, strength training and ab workouts.

I have become extra strict with my exercising. I used to exercise 3 times a week but now I made it to 4-5 times and each exercise session is around 30-45 minutes.

If I keep doing this, will I achieve my goals before the fashion show?

How much can overeating ruin your diet?

I’ve been dieting the past few weeks, exercising a bit, and noticed results. However, yesterday I took took the day off, and had many unhealthy foods rounding up to probably around 3500 calories. I ate ~2000 before. How much weight do I gain out of this and how much does this ruin my diet?

When do you start to experience fatigue when only eating 500 calories a day?

I have just started eating only 500 calories a day, and exercising as well each day.
I was told after some point you would start to experience fatigue and weakness but I’m approaching my seven day mark of this and feel fine.

Which makes me think this is alright, its not affecting me any and I’m full. So does the fatigue and weakness come later and if so when does it?
