When people say, “Eat 5-6 small meals a day to increase your metabolism.”, what exactly are they saying? How many calories should these 5-6 small meals contain on a 1,400 calorie diet? (I can not, I repeat, CAN NOT eat over 1,400 calories. All I eat are vegies, fruit and a little bit of junk here and there. It would be impossible for me to eat that much.
Does eating breakfast really help speed up metabolism? I find that if I eat breakfast, I end up pigging out more through-out the day.
Someone has also told me to eat something at least every 3 hours. How will that help boost metabolism?
I drink about a gallon of water/tea a day. I’ve been walking for 3 miles everyday for a long time, but personally I don’t think that’s enough exercise.—So I started walking 5 miles yesterday. I think walking 5 miles a day plus 25 minutes on the stationary bike 3-4 days a week should be enough exercise.

For the first question:
You exercise throughout the day. By eating many small meals in between, it’s easier for your body to burn them so they don’t turn into stored fat. Just eat the same you would eat with three meals, just in smaller amounts. I’m not sure about the breakfast part.
Like I said before, it will be easier for your body to burn fat. That is probably enough cardio, but don’t forget about the other exercises.

I’m an 18 year old female. 5’4 112lbs. I am moderately active. I eat healthy most of the time.
Right now I am consumin anywhere from 1200-1400cal/day. I seem to maintain with that.
Although, I want to lose about 12lbs over the next 2.5months.
How many calories should I be eating for weight loss? I am already going to be increasing my cardio/walking each day, but I want to know how much I should eat for weight loss. And should I maintain the amount I eat for weight loss when I reach my goal weight? Would the weight loss “calorie amount” then be the equivalent to my “maintenace” calories from then on?

I’m 5″3′, female, 122 pounds, and I think I’ve hit a plateau on my “weight loss”. I’ve barely lost anything since I started MONTHS ago, so I thought maybe it was a plateau. Is this an acceptable amount to possibly break this plateau?
Sunday: 1600
Monday: 1400
Tuesday: 1250
Wednesday: 1200
Thursday: 1300
Friday: 1500
Saturday: 1400
Or do I have to eat MORE? :/
I do exercise almost every day, I usually alternate between strength training one day and cardio the next for 20-30 minutes.

Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser has said to lose that last 15 pounds, you have to be sure never to go below your basal metabolic requirements for calories. YOu figure that out with a calculator here:

So yours is around 1350-1400? So you’re eating around what is right, it seems. You should probably exercise more, specifically, weight lift, to get more muscle to burn more calories.

Hihi, I am 14 years old 5”2 and I weigh 130 lbs. In August I started loosing weight, I lost my first 10 lbs exercising by butt off and eating two slices of bread and one apple a day. After reaching 140 my mom gave me a book called Fat to Skinny. So I started loosing weight really slowly by eating A lot of bacon and eating 1 to 2 pieces of bread and some lettace a day, I reached to 130 where I currently still am. For the last 3 weeks ive been eating Apples/Special K/Skim milk/Green tea, And eating only 300 too 500 calories.. Yeah, my stomach has seriously shrunk, Ive been on this platue for 2 weeks now and i am really getting sick of it, So today I ate A whole lot of peanut butter to try and break it. I have heard of “Yo-Yo Dieting” where people eat really low calories and then start eating 1200 calories again, And end up gaining all there weight back, So is me eating a whole lot of calories tonight gonna really mess me up? Am I gonna gain from upping my calories? Don’t say “zomg14 yr old go enjohy ur life” I am home schooled, so I am mostly on my butt all day.
I am going to start eating more calories from now on, I don’t want my stomach to shrink, But I mostly want to know is me eating from 400 calories a day all the way to 1,500 calories a day gonna screw me up like Yo-Yo dieting says, Gonna gain weight? :/ Thanks for answers. ![]()

Dude if you’re exercising you need more than 500 calories.And you’re not getting any fat in your diet, fat doesn’t make you fat. Look into paleo nutrition or the zone diet. both of those things are totally legit I’ve seen them change people’s lives. Trust me. You need more food. That’s why you got so hungry today

I weigh 149lbs and i’m 28 years old. I work out at the gym 3-4 days a week for an hour and a half. Right now i’m eating 450 calories a day and burning 550 calories at the gym. I really need to know how much calories I should be eating to lose weight with the amount of exercise i’m doing and how many calories should I burn.

First eat more then 450 calories a healthy diet is 2000 I suggest a diet of between 1200 and 1400 you will never lose weight not eating. It only drives your body to store more because it thinks less food is available. Work out more, do cardio and stay hydrated I suggest either an interval run (jog for ammount of time then sprint then jog then sprint) it is possible to get a good workout that burns 2000+ calories in a single workout you just have to be willing to put in the effort.

That would be your BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate (what you burn just being alive).

Yours should be around 1400 calories a day, so if you don’t do anything at all you should be eating around this much to maintain weight. But since you probably do get up, sit, stand, and move about a little in your day, it’s more like ~1600 calories that you could eat to maintain weight.
Use around 1500-1600 as your guide each day, and if you still feel hungry naturally than perhaps add some more until you find a balance.
If you were to walk around somewhere, or go someplace, and exercise, the number would be higher too, closer to 1600-1800 for a lightly active person, 1800-2000 for an moderately active person and 2000+ for a very active person, or someone in an intense sport that practices everyday.

Alright. I am 17 years old, female, currently 113.5lbs. I used to be 125lbs approximately before I started this “diet”. However I’ve noticed that the diet has been taken to an extreme..
I eat. a tiny bowl of special k in the morning
a lettuce salad with lemon and salt for lunch
and another lettuce salad with lemon, and some light tuna for dinner
every single day I usually eat that, sometimes ill have grapes and pickles in between
i also drink a lot of tea
the thing is, I think this is like only 400 cals a day? which is completely unhealthy but the guilt i feel when I eat more is horrible, yesterday I made myself throw up after eating a peanut butter sandwhich.
But now after around a month of this I am at my breaking point. I am looking at this box of KD and im thinking….. i just want this. I feel like my body is a fucking failure. I am 113lbs, people who are my height and 125 lbs look better than me. I excercise but my hips and stomach just are NOT cute. WHY. why do I have fail genetics? these other people arent putting themselves through a daily torture and they still look good. they eat what they want and still look good. I hate this & im starting to hate myself.
My mom just said I was stupid for starving myself and now when I stop im just going to gain everything back… so should i just keep on going or what…. im boiling the water for the KD on the stove as we speak.
ps I do atleast minimum 3-4 hours of kickboxing cardio a week but I try and get there more often. so imm no just dieting. i also just started doing 8 minute abs twice daily idk eughgh

you actually underwight, i think, my doc said that at 5 feet you should be 100 pounds, and every inch you should have 5 pounds, so at 5’6 you shold be 130, but i know what you mean im not a diet to and whenever i eat more than 1200 cal i feel gross, 400 cal is really bad, and once you start eating more calories after you lost what you want, it’ll all gain back. my advice is to, add some fruit, banana oranges apples graduallly try to increase your intake by 100 each week, that way you wont gain the weight, but will keep the weight lost off.

A couple of days ago, while strolling the aisles of walmart, i came across a very familiar product title: “Hydroxycut”. I had given diet pills some thought previously, as i am relatively overweight, and thus, decided to pick up a bottle and follow the suggested schedual (on the bottle). 3 Days into the plan, I have commited 30-45 minuted on the bike everyday, while popping a pill a 1/2 hour before every meal.
One of my biggest questions revolves around my diet. I try and have a small, 1/2 cup of cereal in the morning, fruit for lunch, a snack wrap for supper and maybe another couple of fruits in place of snacks.
Asking anyone familiar with the topic, is what I am doing acceptable/leading to weight loss. Mind you, my plan is most probably long term as I am looking to shed a big chunk of the fatty mass on me. Once again, I am a relative rookie with respect to the subject, and would love to avoid a trip to the doctors as much as possible.

As long as you’re eating healthy… and toning your body.
Make sure you eat at least 2 fruits a day, and 2 servings of veggies a day as well. Those are key.
Also, make sure you keep drinking liquids, at least 8 glasses of liquid a day – water, diet soda… anything with not many calories. You don’t want to be not eating your calories, but drinking them instead.
Remember, the average metabolism is around 1500-2000 calories a day, so stay eating under that amount to lose some weight.
I eat a lot of the healthy choice/smart ones/ weightwatchers frozen meals. They have the rights amount of meat and veggies in them with no more than 400 calories a piece. Add an apple or a piece of fruit to it, and it’s a meal.
Make sure you’re toning your body too… Riding a bike is nice, but when you start losing weight, you want to tone the areas you’re losing it from… ex – crunches, push ups, squats… mostly because you don’t want the skin to hang after the fat is gone.

Okay so I’m just going to open up because I no longer care who knows… not that any of my family anyway…
First off let me tell you all that I’m still in “healthy weight” (according to an online BMI test and my “wii fit”), I am 5 foot 6 1/2 inches and weigh 146 pounds.
This all started as a simple diet, I stopped eating seconds and I became a vegetarian (for moral reasons, that later changed to fat/calorie intake reasonings). I began at 1400 calories a day, and slowly and surely I found myself down to a 700 calorie diet (that I OFTEN go over)… I have my good days and my bad days, some days I will wake up and see the eating issue in me, I will see the weight loss I’ve gone through and know I need help (days like today).. and other times I see nothing but fat, those are the days I will spend hours on end watching “thinspo” videos on youtube and exercising in front of the TV… I will plan my whole week’s calorie intake and make sure to punish myself (both physically (i.e; cutting and/or burning myself) and mentally (i.e stand in front of a mirror and call myself fat and think of every incident someone has called me fat until I’m in tears). I go to the gym at the least three times a week, but exercise daily… the days I go to the gym every morning I do 20-40 minutes on the stair climber then 20-60 minutes on the bicycle… Whenever I try to tell my mother I need help and I think I might have either an eating disorder or a borderline eating disorder she doesn’t believe me because she thinks that only girls and guys that are MAJORLY thin have ED’s…
I have basically lost all hope, and have OD’d several times because I feel I rather be dead then fat and miserable… But every time I OD my body just spits it back up or it doesn’t truly affect me.
I’m living alone and I’m scared and feeling like I have nothing in my life right now…
Is this an eating disorder or am I just mentally unstable?

Your mother is wrong. You are obsessing over your eating habits to the point where it is causes you distress and interfering with a normal lifestyle. Most people with eating disorders are normal to overweight. Tell your mother that your obsession with caloric intake is negatively affecting your life, and “I need help with this. Mom. I can’t fix it on my own. I’m afraid it will get worse if I don’t take action now, and may control the rest of my life. Please, please, will you let me see a cognitive-behavioral psychologist who will help me set goals and work on overcoming this.”
Do you think your mother would say “No” to that plea? Then don’t forget to add “people aren’t crazy just because they see a psychologist” and “I don’t blame you for this problem at all.” It’s something I need to work through myself, but I need professional help.
