I recently started a weight loss program where I have 6 protein shakes (not whey protein or what you buy in stores) that essentially add up to about 600 calories per day. The idea is to get your body in “ketosis” and it causes major loss in a fairly quick amt of time.
Have any of you ever done this? What were your results after 30 days?
I am being realistic about this. I have a total of 50 lbs to lose but I KNOW I won’t lose it in 30 days (even with this program). Did any of you work out with it and if so, did that help the results?
PS: No need to offer your opinions on “fasting” and using the shakes. I know the risks and have also consulted with my own doctor. Just curious about results and what else I can expect from a ‘non-medical’ point of view.

My body was in ketosis once. I had a really bad stomach virus, and it does make you lose weight quickly. I weighed only 118 before I got sick, and I lost 10 pounds in 3 days. So yes, this will definitely work, although your body will not enter ketosis as quickly, seeing as you will be consuming SOME calories. When I was sick, I didn’t eat at all. If you know the risks and have spoken to your doctor, as long as your doctor is okay with it, go for it. You may actually lose close to the 50 pounds in 30 days, depending on how quickly your body enters ketosis.

I am trying the Atkins diet (please no negative comments about the diet)…I am aware on the concerns people have with the diet. My question is, how does the diet work? It doesn’t seem like with all the fatty foods, that the calories could be low at all. Could you potentially gain wait on the Atkins if you are having too many calories?…or does the diet work because when carbs are removed from the diet, “ketosis” takes place, and your body burns fat?

I loved the atkins diet when I was on it. I lost 20 lbs in three weeks!! But I went off of it and the this year I tried to do it and I ended up gaining weight!! I think if you do it and kinda watch your calories then you should be alright. I didn’t watch mine at all. So if you can stick with it and do that I think it will work. Just really use the menu suggestions in the book. GOOD LUCK!

My stepmother claims that “ketosis” is a state of mind. She believes that when a person doesn’t eat, their body tells them that they aren’t hungry, “protecting” them from the consequences of starvation, by “telling” that person that they’re not hungry.
Through my own personal research, I’ve found that she’s wrong. Ketosis, is, in fact the state of the body using fat to make energy. Some of that fat is converted into “ketones,” which are a form of bodily energy that some organs, such as the heart and liver prefer to glucose.
If she is right or viceversa, can anyone provide a good definition for “ketosis,” and if it even does exist, the name of the symptom of which my stepmother believes is called “ketosis”?

You (as well as Wikipedia and any other reliable source) are correct. Your mother is just saying that people who eat less are able to adjust their metabolism down in order to survive longer, so they won’t starve as quickly. So, the rate of ketosis is reduced. She is not using the term correctly. She is talking about an adjustment in metabolism. But it isn’t done by the brain. It is a systemic action by your body. metabolsim is the rate of all the reactions in your body. Your body can change the rate of energy consumption.

Has anyone tried a diet that puts you into ketosis? What were your side effects? How much weight did u lose?
I am 6’2″ and weigh 218 lbs. Doesn’t sound bad but I’ve been thin all my life until I hit my 30′s. Never got over 175 lbs. I’m 35 now. I broke my leg in december so the cardio went out the door and I won’t be able to even jog until around august. I put on about 18 pounds since then. All fat. All gut. I am thinking about a low carb diet or Cyclical Ketogenic Diet to be exact. I am wondering out of those who tried and stuck with a diet that was low carb and put you into ketosis what your experience was like. Can you drink alcohol on these diets? Did you try supplements that worked better than others? What about food and which tasted the best and worked for you? Thx
