A diet high in protein and fat is fine for athletes. I work out very strenuously each day, and I eat a very very low-carb diet, probably lower carb than Atkins. I consume lots of whey protein in any given day, consuming about 50 grams of whey every 3 hours. This helps build muscle and prevents muscle breakdown that can happen after a strenuous endeavor.
