The glycemic index was originally formed as a way for diabetics to determine how fast the sugars in particular foods enter your bloodsteam, since diabetics need to keep their blood sugar low. However, the glyemic index was created based on experiments with individual foods eaten alone, and it was determined that in a real meal, there is such a mix of different sugars and things that affect their absorption, that it is impossible to really tell how fast a particular food will release its sugars into the bloodstream. Despite the fact that most nutritionists consider the glycemic index outdated, even for diabetics, some people have misread information about it and decided to use it to lose weight, thinking that if something releases sugars more slowly, it will cause less weight gain. However, the amount of sugar (and protein, fat, and alcohol), not how fast it is absorbed by your body, is what matters. Try just eating fewer calories and getting more exercise.

Low glycemic foods are the best foods out there for your body. Maybe the chart you've been referring to is inacurate. And make sure you're getting in 6 small meals every day, don't eat after about 6 or 7, and drink LOTS of water. I do think a good exercise plan would really help you. And if your husband doesn't think you spend enough time with him, why don't the two of you go for a nice walk after the kids are in bed? You would get your exercise and he will get his quality time. We love going on walks together because then we aren't distracted by the TV or computer and just get to talk and get some fresh air.

Just really commit yourself to this and I think you'll be able to do it. Good luck!
